There are a range of styles that are revealed during fashion week and one of them this season was pants with prints and primarily on men. It takes a certain confidence to carry off these looks which Damien –featured in both photos below– must have in spades, because we have even more photos of him from different days in other printed pants. What do you think of this trend? Hot, heinous or something altogether different?

With the ongoing popularity of sunglasses and spectacles that are more like sculptural objets d'art for your eyes (think Mercura or Coco & Breezy) it is not outside the realm of possibility for people to substitute masks such as this one designed and worn by Andre Benton. While not everyone could get away with it during the day I can completely see this trending in the nightlife scene.

A few weeks back in a "self-portrait" photo I was wearing my new black silk DVF overalls with a white shirt and a black at. He seems to have taken the same concept with a different spin: instead of silk, leather. Instead of a tank top a button up with a tie and instead of a black cashmere beanie cap a black fedora. Overalls are going to be huge soon. So the question is: will you wear them???

We all saw a return to longer skirt lengths on the Spring 2011 runways this fall. And little by little I'm seeing this out at night as well. This girl appears to be trying to have the best of both worlds by working a longer lace dress over a smaller body-con black one. It's an interesting alternative and one I haven't seen before. The messily pulled back hair and filigreed belt buckle gives it a slight prairie girl vibe but she saved it from being too referential to country by avoiding cowboy boots and sticking with some great black platform booties.

Flipped Out

This photo reminds me of a book I had as a kid that was illustrations of different people split into thirds so you could flip through it and mix it up: put the ladies high heels with a fat man's middle and a little girl's face. The top half and bottom half here are completely incongruous. He also looks like he could kick your a** if you gave him a critique...so I'm not going to do that! I actually think the red skirt is kind of interesting and I'm totally going to steal how he styled his t-shirt with the safety pins! I just might not wear this as an ensemble...but that's just me!
UPDATE: in addition to being a fashion rebel, I was just informed by a reader that the man in the photo is Malcolm Harris who is the founder of The One Dress Project  whose mission is mission is to support global organizations that enhance and protect women's rights, safety, health and well-being. Most excellent.

spikeMinnie
There are always trends listed online from military to animal prints. But what I am seeing currently on the streets are spikes and studs. You can see them from head to toe: but hopefully not all on one person!

I saw 2 people in 1 day wearing grey denim one piece ensembles.
Is this a trend we like?

Yay or nay?

So I wanted to show one more girl with this type of haircut...and now I'm done. I also like this girl because she's so androgynous...usually it's the boys who rock that look (and the occasional model). The skateboard's a nice (if unintentional) touch!

shavedsides1
I know I brought this up last winter but the shaved sides style has taken off and is here with a vengeance. What I hate are the girls with one side shaved and the other side long and stringy looking. It looks to me like they started copying Britney Spears head shaving fiasco and then suddenly stopped. But I do like the short on top looks on girls. Emma here is particularly adorable. Also love her shoes and Peggy Noland jacket.

Gaga Inspired?

gagaInspiered
I don't know if Lady Gaga inspires more creative dressing or if she's just a reflection of our times but I suspect it's a bit of both. I'm not saying this girl is trying to be her, but simply that the idea of wearing a leotard as your main garment doesn't seem as strange as it would in the pre-Gaga era. I like the Lanvinesque jacket and her big glittery bag. But what I really love is her makeup (although the lip color clashes with the red on the jacket) I don't normally comment on makeup but her lips are a great color and look stained and glossy at the same time as though she's just eaten forbidden fruit...and she wisely kept her eyes simple and just a hint of blush on seriously flawless skin. See below for a better view of what I'm talking about!

In case we had any question that suspenders were here to stay, there is not a night I go out without seeing them somewhere. This girl wears them with striped pants, clogs and Pamela Love jewelry and makes suspenders seem hot.

I don't know what's with me as of late that I feel compelled to show 2 examples in a row. Maybe because when I'm sorting through photos I start to see the trends after first pointing them out. At any rate this is the second of two photos showing the suspender trend. (and I have a third, but don't worry –I'm moving on) They have a totally different look than the girls in the other photo: kinda Germanic. kinda butch dyke. kinda looking at the camera like "we're being polite but don't consider ourselves fashionistas". But their attention to details says otherwise: the great old shoes that look like they could have been bought at a thrift store or at Atelier, the shirt deliberately buttoned to the top on a ferociously hot day and the insouciance of no makeup except bright red lipstick all say we do give a damn about how we look–just in our own way...and that is the essence of style...

In Suspense

newStreet-8
These girls are kind of working a '90s grunge vibe which isn't necessarily a bad thing. What I'm looking at here though is the suspenders. When I was in Madrid recently I saw an amazing pair of acid green cotton pants with suspenders. I tried them on in the store and while they were very "Y-3" they weren't enough "me" to justify buying them. If I had though, I know I'd keep at least one - if not both - of the suspenders down...but these aren't the only times I've seen suspenders so, like the overalls, I wonder if these are just blips on the screen or retro revivals?

Over-it-all?

_DSC0016-copy
I feel like I need to issue another trend alert: this time for overalls. I am seeing more and more of them. Okay, not every day. But probably once a week. And this is something I haven't seen in years. So...overalls –are they coming back? a good idea? or just a blip on the screen?

newStreet-9
There is the pantless look of Lady Gaga and Carine Roitfeld that show a bodysuit bottom and then there is the pantless look where it looks like an oversized shirt (but not fitted enough to be a shirtdress)that was seen on Mary-Kate Olsen in 2009 and Taylor Momsen more recently. I have a feeling this could be one of those looks that the wearer will question in years to come but what do you think? Does this work on her? Is it a style you like in general or not?

3-for-1

newStreet-10
Skinny, shiny with sequins: these 3 boys are ready for anything this weekend...and I covet the lips on the boy in the middle. I do have to ask, however, what is up with the "Rosary-as-necklace" that seems to be around the neck of every other person I photograph lately. There is a fine line between being 'on trend' and trying too hard. I think rosaries belong in a church or bedside table. Thoughts?

All the cool kids came out on the hottest day of the year to swill champagne like swells at the new Forever 21 store in Times Square. The bastion of trendy clothes at killer prices is now in the heart of the city.  So it begs the question as to whether this gal's abbreviated outfit is intentionally/ironically or accidentally channeling someone south of the Mason-Dixon line...

Spots...dots...polka shots...this is the last photo I'll post with the dot theme. But it does beg the question: where is this coming from? And do we like it? My jury is out. I do think the shiny retro shoes are cool...what do you think. Dots: hot or not?

As promised, a few people from the party. I love the straw fedora. They're everywhere right now.  I'll be picking up a $10 version on Canal Street because I'm not sure this trend will last more than a summer but it will be a fun way addition to an outfit in the meantime...

_fedora
About a month ago I posted a photo of the elegant Houman Farahmand wearing rather high waisted pants - which I believe were leather but had a cut closer to leggings than trousers. At the time I thought they were a bit odd but Houman made them chic. Now I am seeing these pants on the left and am wondering if it's a trend that I've only just noticed. Whether it catches on or not it's nice to see risks taken. I also love the pale fedora worn with black...something else unexpected but successful.
